How to Paint an Adorable Cow Pumpkin 🐄🎃
Looking for a fall craft that’s cute, simple, and a little different from the traditional jack-o’-lantern?
Turn a pumpkin into an adorable cow pumpkin!
This painted pumpkin is perfect for farmhouse fall decor, a front porch display, Halloween decorating, or a fun craft project with the kids. Best of all, there’s no carving required, so your pumpkin can stay on display much longer.
You don’t need much to recreate this cute cow. Grab a pumpkin with a fairly smooth surface, acrylic craft paint, paintbrushes, and a pencil.

For paint colors, you’ll want white or cream, black, and a warm tan or light brown. A small detail brush will make the eyes, nostrils, and eyelashes much easier to paint. You may also want a clear matte sealer to help protect your finished design, especially if the pumpkin will be displayed outside.
Step 1: Choose Your Pumpkin
Start with a round pumpkin that has a smooth surface. A squat, rounded pumpkin works especially well because its shape naturally creates the look of a cute cow face.
Wash away any dirt and allow the pumpkin to dry completely before painting.
Step 2: Paint the Pumpkin White
Cover the pumpkin with white or creamy-white acrylic paint.
You may need two or three thin coats to get good coverage. Allow each coat to dry before adding the next.
Don't worry about making it perfectly uniform. A little natural texture showing through gives the finished cow a charming handmade look.
Step 3: Add the Cow Spots
Once the white paint is dry, it's time for the spots!
Use black paint to create irregular cow-print shapes around the pumpkin. Avoid making every spot the same size or shape. Some should be larger, some smaller, and they should look slightly random.
Leave the center front of the pumpkin mostly open for the face.
Tip: Lightly sketch the spots with a pencil first if you're nervous about painting them freehand.
Step 4: Paint the Cow's Snout
The snout is what really starts bringing this little cow to life.
Paint a large horizontal oval near the lower center of the pumpkin using a warm tan or caramel-brown color.
Keep the edges slightly organic rather than creating a perfectly symmetrical oval.
After the snout dries, add two small black nostrils near the bottom half.
Step 5: Add Those Adorable Eyes
Above the snout, paint two large black circular eyes.
Add a couple of tiny white highlights inside each eye. These little dots make a huge difference—they instantly give the cow more personality.
Finish each eye with a few small black eyelashes along the outer edge.
Suddenly, it's a cow. 🐄
Step 6: Add the Final Details
Take a look at your pumpkin and add any finishing touches.
You can adjust the cow spots, clean up the edges of the snout, add another coat of paint where needed, or make the eyes slightly larger.
Once everything is completely dry, you can optionally spray or brush on a clear matte craft sealer.
Make It Your Own
The fun part about this project is that every cow pumpkin can look different.
Try making an entire little herd! Create a classic black-and-white cow, a brown-and-white Highland-inspired version, a pink cow pumpkin, or even add a small bow near the stem.
You could also paint several pumpkins in different sizes to create a cow pumpkin family for your fall porch.

The Perfect No-Carve Fall Pumpkin Idea
This cow pumpkin proves you don't need complicated supplies—or incredible painting skills—to make something adorable for fall.
The simple combination of a white pumpkin, irregular black spots, big eyes, and that little brown snout creates a project that's easy enough for beginners but cute enough to become the star of your fall decor.
Put it on your porch, add it to a farmhouse display, or make one for someone who absolutely loves cows.
And fair warning: once you paint one, you may want an entire herd. 🐄🎃
